The suspected shooter at Fort Hood at one point lived in Vinton and graduated from Virginia Tech, according to Roanoke Times archives.
Military officials told The Associated Press that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July.
Hasan was the son of Palestinian immigrants and Vinton residents Malik Awadallah Hassan and Hanan Ismail "Nora" Hasan. Nora Hasan ran the now-defunct Capitol Restaurant on the Roanoke Market and the Community Grocery Store in Roanoke. Hasan's father owned the Mount Olive Grill and Bar. Both parents are deceased.
The Washington Post reported Hasan is a U.S. citizen and was registered to vote in 2001 and 2004 in Virginia, with an address in Vinton and he had also lived at one point lived in Roanoke, records show, according to The Post.
The Virginia-born soldier was single with no children. He is 39.
He was a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1995, according to the Roanoke Times.
Hasan received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. A university newsletter lists him as also earning a master's degree in public health there last year, according to The AP. The university educates military and federal public health service staff, offering graduate degrees in areas such as public health and nursing.
The officials who had access to Hasan's military record said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed. There he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because military records are confidential.
Federal law enforcement officials said Hasan had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
Officials say Internet postings they found appeared to have been made by Hasan, but they are still trying to confirm that he was the author. They say an official investigation was not opened.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.
One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.
