These things leave you blistering mad. We need to call our congressmen and try to inform them how mad. It is a recipe for tax disaster at the expense of jobs.

fly, as I mentioned in another thread somewhere, I've communicated with Butterfield on this one several times.
Go to his website - his constituency is protected, they'll get increased amounts on their EBT cards and increased Earned Income Credits to offset their higher costs. He's all for it since it won't effect those that vote for him.

I'm sure there are some good points to be made on the proposed tax. But--the messengers are killing the message. Hannity sitting there waving that pen with washed up Newt, makes it hard to hear or see anything else that might be important. The republicans could do better than that if they plan to convert anyone not already sitting in the choir.

I am a registered democrat.....but usually sway more to the republican party the later years. I also don't vote all one way just because either, I make a firm decision on who is in the race and go from there and select what I think to be the best candidate for the job, especially state.
Anyhoo....reguardless of political prty, NOW is not the time to bring on something like this, the economy is not strong enough to support it period.

I will say you are a much better messenger than Hannity or Newt.

People need to realize too - it's not just YOUR energy bills that will go up drastically, so will the energy bills of manufacturers, shippers and other businesses. That means that they will have to raise their prices to consumers - more inflation.
The higher our prices go, the less competitive our manufacturing sector will be when it comes to the Chinese, Indians and others that do not have these kinds of restrictions on their economies.

Looks like Republicans got it passed in the house.
| Quote: | GOP defectors face conservative wrath
@ 11:18 am by Eric Zimmermann
Meet the eight Republicans who will now incur the wrath of every conservative blog on the internet:
Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.)
Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.)
Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.)
Rep. Frank LoBiondo
Rep. Leonard Lance (R-N.J.)
Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.)
Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Wash.)
Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.)
These are the Republicans who voted for Waxman-Markey last night, and without whose support the bill would have been defeated. (44 Democrats voted against it.)
Conservative bloggers are already up in arms. Michelle Malkin has put up a "WANTED" poster with pictures of the eight "turncoats."
RedState has labeled them "Quisling Republicans," referencing the Norwegian traitor during World War II. He was later executed.
At least two of the Republican defectors–Kirk and Castle–are considering Senate campaigns in 2010. |

Yeah, the energy tax will hurt some in the short term, but who said doing something right is easy? To use market forces to reduce our energy need is a good idea, and pays off in the long run. Remember when the price of gas went up, and folks started buying more fuel efficient vehicles? Yeah, it hurt. But if you raise it some, and start getting folks to go in that direction, you will end up being less dependent on Iran and other folks.

You don't get the big picture Kestrel.........right now with unemployment across the nation at about the highest time, as well as welfare and government assistance programs, its not the best time to put something in place such as this......if you think long term, its still not good. There is people that have vehicles that are paid for and have been for some time, but when you increase fuel prices, energy bills, and the consumer cost on purchases that will go thru the roof again due to transport expenses, they really will not be in the position to go out and buy any vehicle, fuel efficent or not. People are just NOW getting out of the slump we have been in for months, some are worse than they were a year back, some have given up completely and lost all, others are hanging on by a shoe string. Putting a damper on folks like this will be the final nail in the coffin for some, and it will have an effect on long term even worse when they can't pay their bills and their credit scores go to poor and they can't buy anything period......hows that for long term goals.

Jun 28, 2009 in Politics Warren Buffett Opposes the Energy Tax »
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett supported Barack Obama’s Presidential bid last year, and has never been a proponent of major tax cuts. But in an interview today with CNBC, Buffet slammed the new Energy Tax being voted on in Congress this week saying it is a “huge tax” that will “harm an awful lot of people”.
While Buffett’s opposition to this legislation underscores the damage the Energy Tax will do to our economy, you don’t have to be a financial wizard to know that a massive tax increase isn’t the cure to our ailing economy. In fact, it could turn this recession into the next Great Depression.

And I think you don't get the big picture. Of course it would be disruptive to do a big energy tax all at once. But once this economy starts to turn around, you start to ease into it.
I think it is funny that conservatives try to kill the energy tax idea by saying it hurts the poor, but have no problem with a flat tax or national sales tax instead of the current income tax.

And as we ease into it - we start easing American companies out. They won't be able to compete with Chinese, Indian and other companies where they aren't operating under the same restrictions as we are.

Even if this bill does get shot down in the senate, it will still be implemented through more regulatory measures by the EPA. So everyone: dems, reps, it don't matter what you are, we are all going to get screwed any way you look at it. So the best thing to do is to figure out a way to make the gubbmint think you are as poor as dirt so you can get somebody else to pay your bills for you. Coastie, you called that shot very well already. That is what makes this bill so stupid, pass something you know is going to break the backs of the people that are just barely keeping this economy afloat, and then take what little they might have left and give it to the zero liability, pork barrel loving, welfare "big shots" so they can live high on the hog while the rest of us won't have a pot to piss in and a window to throw it out of!!!!!!

Coastie, I agree with you. But.... I tried to in 2007 and he responded in a less than professional manner, and with the normal spin, that he was not interested in the issue that I had presented to him. A legitimate issue too. Typical!!!

slider - my experience with him to this point is - strict party line. He won't buck the party no matter what. And, the constituents that matter to him are covered on this cap and trade thing - they'll get increased EBT and earned income credits when they submit their taxes.
