More crap courtesy of our General Assembly and former Governor Mike Easley. Dell is closing the plant in Winston-Salem that was given close to a quarter billion dollars in tax incentives to locate here and create 1,500 jobs over 20 years. They made it 5 years and apparently only had 900 people working at the plant. I think the company should be forced to payback what it was given in tax breaks if they are going to close the plant. NC taxpayers took a big risk on this as well as all those employees who left other jobs and came to work at the plant, and since Dell has been often beating corporate earnings expectations, I think they can certainly afford to payback any and all grants and tax incentives they received.

This is why I am strongly against government intervention in business. Provide them the necessary services and hookups to facilitate them doing business, but if all of the states and local governments stopped pandering to corporations to beg them to come to their location, then this wouldn't be a problem.

Dell built that plant to make desktops at just about the time everyone started switching to laptops. American companies just can't compete with overseas labor. The average wage in Mexico is now a whopping $4.00 per day. Companies are leaving Mexico because that wage is higher than China, Malaysia, and Vietnam, where wages are typically below $1 per day. Free Trade sure sounds like a good idea on paper, but in reality, for Americans, it sucks!
