Kid dies at RRHS?Has anyone heard that a kid died today at RRHS after some weights fell on his chest while bench pressing? I heard it but can't believe that the school would let that activity go on unsupervised.

Ok, I have the official word. A 15 year old RRHS student was lifting weights in Creekside Court alone when something happened and he died. When paramedics arrive onscene he had no pulse. He had a genetic heart problem that had previously given him problems. He was NOT at RRHS at the time this occurred.

I talked to a group of kids at the baseball game last night and they were pretty upset. I was reasonably sure there was something to it but I didn't know all the details. Thanks Nighthawk.

I was told at work this morning that he was indeed at the High School and he died while lifting weights.

It did in deed happen at the high school, he was lifting weights in the weight room. That info. came from a school board member, he got pretty upset when I asked him about it, seems they didn't want it to get out, that it took place at the high school.

It did NOT happen at the high school weight room. Were you at RRHS yesterday? Did you talk to the faculty at RRHS? I did. The kid was at home lifting alone and either had a heart attack and dropped the weights on himself, or dropped them, which caused him to have a heart attack. This was off campus and after school hours, per the HS staff. Whoever supposedly talked to a school board member has been misinformed or is just trying to spread a false rumor.

I'm with you on that Nighhawk. Everyone has been spreading the news that it happened at the high school and in fact it DID NOT. My brother works out at the weight room EVERYDAY and it happened at the boys home. Also the boy hadn't been attending school regularly for a long time, he was too young to drop out so he had just quit coming.

I have talked to two not one but two, one male and one female, board member and they both said that it did happen in the weight room at the High School. So it is not false rumor.

This is so very sad. I know his grandmother Miss Annie from when I worked I worked at the rest home, my deepest sympathy to his family & friends.

I must say that the school board members are misinformed. I have spoken to the coach in charge of the weight room, EMS members who responded to the call at his house, and several others at school. I don't know why school board members would not know the full story, but that I can't speak for.

The boy hadn't even attended school in the last 6 months. He had missed over 70 days. It didn't happen at the high school. PLUS it's Roanoke Rapids don't you think if that was true, it would've been ALL OVER the daily herald by now. Cmon now.

does it really matter WHERE he died??? There is a child DEAD, another senseless death in my opinion.

I can't say that I'm surprised that the board members don't know the whole story. Reminds me of my work...

The reason it matters SWgirl is that if he died lifting weights alone in the RRHS weightroom, it would mean that the coaching staff had been negligent in their duties, would likely lose their jobs, and would open up the district to a big lawsuit. I hate demeaning the staff by saying they allowed him to bench unattended when in fact he was not going to school and was doing this on his own accord.

nighthawk...I understand that, but the point I was making is people on here want to argue about it. This IS someone's child we are talking about. Just seemed to me that folks are forgetting that point.
