THE CURE

Lawson another do-nothing republican?

I was wondering why Greg Lawson didn't accomplish anything while he was in charge of the RR police department. I found out today he was just following the party line, do nothing and hope it turns out ok.

and how did you find this out?
THE CURE

How did I find out what? That he did nothing or he is a republican?

He was just following the party line - what party, what line.

Do nothing?  and hope it turns out ok.

How did you find out this was his philosophy?

A police chief works for the city manager - and is constrained in what they can and can't do based on city policy (which comes from the elected officials - mayor, john baker and the other council members).

A police chief that freelances and goes against city policy may not be there very long.  So.... there are limitations on what he can and can't do.

A sheriff, on the other hand, is an elected official (can't be fired by the commissioners or the country manager).  A sheriff has a lot more flexibility in performing his job.  (the commissioners do have a hammer as far as the sheriff is concerned - they control the amount of money budgetted for the sheriff's department - so, it behooves the sheriff to work somewhat with the commissioners).
THE CURE

So are you blaming the mill village situation on Jeff Frazier?
coastie

Absolutely not.  I just mentioned the sheriff's department to show the differnces between the two.

You never answered my questions.

You found out today he was just following the party line.   Which party?  Which line?

What I said was the police chief is a city department head that reports to the city manager.  The city manager reports to the mayor and council.

Council establishes policy and priorities and the manager and city department heads work to achieve those policies and priorities.

Your last post is the first in which you said anything at all about the mill village.  What about the mill village are you specifically talking about?  Code enforcement issues?  Crime issues?  (they're inter-related in my opinion).

Give some specifics.

And again - which party??  Which line?  Which party had the line that said "do noting and hope it turns out ok"?
THE CURE

The republican party. That's their m.o. No regulation, less government. That's what Lawson did. I don't know if the city manager was a republican but i'l find out and let you know.

Lawson and his buddy Jim said he's going to clean up the mill village as a city councilman. I'm wondering how he's going to do it since he couldn't do it as police chief.
coastie

Ok, then... So.... "he was just following the party line, do nothing and hope it turns out ok"  means he was just following the republican party line, do nothing and hope it turns out ok.

That makes a whole lot of sense.

Lawson and his buddy Jim

I see now.  Because Jim Garret has endorsed Lawson, that makes him a bad person.

That figures.

As a council person, Lawson would be in a position to help shape policy - that policy could result in direction to the Manager to have his departments focus on the Mill Village and do what they can to clean things up.
THE CURE

The Police Chief has more leeway than you think on getting things done. Do you think the former city manager told Lawson to leave the mill village alone?

Oh and yes, if Jim Garrett is endorsing him that is reason enough to vote for the other guy.
coastie

Guess that's really the crux of the issue.  Your dislike for Jim G. translates into automatic opposition to anyone he's for.

It's really ironic in a way.  You really dislike Jim, but visit his site regularly to report the goings on over there.

You really badmouth Foxnews, yet quote them quite often.

You'd think if you really hated those sites, you'd stay away.

And, as a councilperson - what did Baker do to help clean up the mill village?  After all, he was in a position to develop policy on this issue.
THE CURE

I guess you can't have it both ways coastie. People raised hell when Baker got involved in the day to day operations of certain departments. Now you're saying he wasn't involved enough? The Police Chief is responsible for the public safety. Why isn't he setting enforcement policy? At what point did Lawson take responsibility for doing his job? Never?
coastie

I didn't suggest baker get personally involved, but city council should direct the manager to do... a, b, c and d.   The city manager should then direct the appropriate department heads to do a b c and d. (whatever a b c and d are).

If council wants emphasis put on code enforcement/law enforcement activities in the mill village - the city manager should get them together and develop a strategy to do just that.

Indidvidual council members should not get involved with city departments... If a citizens complains about a department to the council member - that council member should report the complaint to the manager.

The city of rr annexed the theatre district and points in between (including interstate 95 between 173 and 171mm).  That stretches resources a little thin.   I don't know if they added any positions as a result of the annexation.  But, perhaps limited resources play a role in the PD's ability to routinely saturate the mill village with officers.  I don't know - just a guess.

The real problem comes to play is the fact that we don't need any disgruntal ex-employees running city council, or even on city council for that matter. I don't know if you guys know it, but Phyllis Lee is the "campaign manager" for Greg Lawson......two pretty much disgruntal ex city employees. Lawson retired, and came out of the closet with all kind of stuff he had bottled up, but didn't say anything about it while he was employed, comes out with a campaign dedicated to clean up the mill village, but didn't clean it up with the highest position in the PD. Lee was pretty much ran out of a job.

Ask yourself......is this want you want running the city? Do you think they would work against the others in place currently? How do you think they'd get along with the other city officials and employees?

How and the hell can you say "those" are answers, if thats the best you can do.....sit in the corner, you really missed the boat this time big boy. All this is about is getting over, Lee is Lawson's campaign manager for one reason and one reason only, think about it......she was a pissed off employee the past few months in, this is their best weapon against Baker...........they really  need to get a life.

If Lawson was any kind f LEADER, all the things he said AFTER he retired, he would have said them as a "city employee." It surely shows his management leadership skills when he, as Chief of Police was scared to step up and say one word, he kept his mouth shut until after the fact. Now, after the fact he is retired wants to throw mud...........not happening period. He didn't say anything as an employee, don't bring it up now either, he had his chances........will he take this same leadership into city council IF he gets elected? Its already a proven fact he is scared to open his mouth, atleast baker tells you whats on his mind, and that you can bank on.......we can't bank on Lawson, cause we know he'll keep his mouth shut already instead of standing up for what he thinks is right. Its all in the newspaper article the Herald did, read it....

cure, I donot understand why you want to jump on Suetra an Greg,go to city council meeting and listen to what go on. When the city starting cutting budget our council members vote to cut their salary 10% to help save money for the taxpayer. But they didnot tell us that in January 1,2007 that Mayor Beale salary went from 6,000 to 10,200 and city council's increase went from 4,500 to 7,500 anually. Why is there no record of this being discussed in a public meeting? This is why a lot of people in Roa Rapids are looking for new leadership. There is also another 1.5millon out there that our leaders want talk about. If we don't get new job in the entertainment district, we the tax payers are going to have to pay. You support jon ask him this question or hv him post the answers.

Ok, we've covered Lawson pretty well.

Now, tell us what Baker has done and what he will do if re-elected.

First let me say welcome to the board One citizen. I think my criticism of Lawson and Scarbrough is legitimate. How can Lawson run on a platform of cleaning up the mill village when he couldn't do it as police chief? Why doesn't anyone ask Scarbrough about her dealings with Ted Gasper? When Scarbrough couldn't get her way with the HCC board of trustees she took her ball and went home. I don't know if I would vote for a politician that doesn't follow through on their committments. I've got a lot of questions but I can't get the one's i've already asked answered.

Why do you support them other than the fact that they are not incumbents?

What platform will Barker run on?  What will Baker say about his relationship with, the Mayor. Parton and Watson?

They always say the one who only asks questions never has any answers either.  How about when you ask a question about Lawson cleaning up this town, let us know Bakers answer
doomster

Baker has been in office for  a good period of time now JHO, what has the guy done bad?? The theater deal you keep talking about is old news man, give it a rest. It happened, its there, and it has been sold, and the payments are being made........do you think Jon or any city offical thought the idea and concept of the theater was going to turn out like it did???? Do you think they meant for it to not do well, it was all done with the ideas that it would bring revenue here, jobs, and growth. Not every single thing falls in place and does as expected....outside of that what has Jon done that is so bad???? What has the mayor done that was so bad???? Sometimes, you need to look at the entire outcome of things of who you are putting in office, how vote outcomes will fall into place when city council has to vote on things. Do me a favor and think about this.......if we put Lawson in there, whats going to happen with his "so called past co-worker" relationships???? Do you think sides will be taken? Do you think votes will go one way or the other??? Not saying this is the case, but sit and think about it for a minute and if you can't see where I am coming from or going, I'll lend you my glasses.

Don't jump up an support or dislike one because another person says jump, think about the big picture and how its going to look down the road if Lawson wins, and I don't think that he will....but if he does, look at the other members and put two and two togethor, if you come up with 6, I givve up.

Just another note for the Lawson party.......a certain fellow at a corner garage here in town says he  had the best time laughing at yall.

a corner garage? what was he laughing at?

Think about it, garage-filling station off of tenth.

From what I heard, he is hurting Jon more than getting laughs. He is telling everyone that Jon is paying him 200.00 per month just to keep the signs there. That's like buying the seat instead of getting out and working the people. Hope it's not any truth in what he saying. That could backfire. Politics is so much fun!!!!!!!
