Man accused of killing dogs in burglary gets 22 years

One of three men accused of killing two dogs during a home invasion in Chattahoochee Hills received a 22 year sentence Friday, the Fulton County District Attorney announced.

Harris, along with Brandon Pettis and Quintavious Mackey, broke into the home of Louise Liles and her husband Richard Dendy on the morning of Aug. 14, 2008 while the couple was away, prosecutors said.

The intruders shot and killed the family’s two dogs, Maya and Ginger, during the burglary. The investigation revealed the dogs did not attack the defendants and, in fact, were running away from the shooters when they were gunned down.

The intruders fled with a computer, a video game system, a rifle, a checkbook and lawn supplies. They were caught a short time later after speeding through town, nearly ramming into a car driven by the community’s public safety director.

The men were later tied to three other burglaries in the area.

Harris pled guilty in April to two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, four counts of burglary and two counts of criminal damage to property in the second degree.

Pettis and Mackey will be tried at a later date.
