The new Beach area....I haven't been to the new beach area---can't even say I've been down there to take a peak...I did notice though that in the Sunday paper---some negative feedback is coming from it. Why why why can't RR have anything without a bunch of thugs taking it over!!!!!!!!! Come on rrpd---do something about it before it gets completely out of hand....

I wouldn't base my opinion on what you read in the Sound Off section of the Herald. Go see for yourself.

I have been several times, usually the early morning hours are the best, before 1PM.........the weekends are thugs galore, been there and seen that already. The PD is fixing to patrol it heavily though Summer, give them a little time to get it fixed.

the problem will go beyond any "thug" activity. theres no lifegaurd. at a city funded facility. someone will drown before the summer's up. believe me, i've searched for people in the lake as a lifegaurd. it isn't easy or fun or successful. that park was a bad idea from day one.

Not just the drowning part, but has anyone noticed that the city pool has like NO people there. The city is going to end up getting aggravated with having no income from the pool so there will probably eventually be a charge to go to the lake park. And yess....i went there the first weekend it opened and had a wonderful time, after that i have been back maybe twice and the atmosphere was about the same as walking in the middle of the night through south rosemary.

Well that is the reason it should have parental supervision for anyone under 18 years old. The park has a swiming area, but thats not all it is for, lots to do out there other than swim. The thing in today's world is the fact folks are more concerned with putting the blame on other people, rather than to watch their kids and make sure they are safe. Folks that can't swim shouldn't even get in to begin with...........but thats not the city's fault. They have signs posted reading no lifeguards on duty, so its just like driving your car down a city street, there is a possibility you might have an accident.
A midnight walk thru south rosemary is kinda funny......I like that one!

When you talk about "thug" activity is someone being bothered or are you talking about the people using the park being black?

i agree doomster BUT for years before i worked there and years after i worked there, the city pool has been the cheapest all day babysitter in town. $3 aprox. I don't know if its the same, but a kid as young as 9 years old can attend the pool by themselves. younger has to be brought in by an adult. Even so, 9 years old, alone at the pool all day. Also, a good portion of those unsupervised children didn't know how to swim. I can't tell you how many times i had to jump in after kids who couldn't swim would just jump off the diving board, knowing they couldn't swim but that you had to come get them. Not scared to DIE, just jumped in. I worked at the pool 5 years. I've pulled out my fair share of non supervised non swimmers. I agree, the park should require adult supervision. But it is also a park, no moniter to moniter who has and doesn't have supervision. I also know7 years or so ago, may 9th 2000 to be exact i believe, 3 young men decided to swim from the boat landing off of 5th st. across the cove to a dock in greenbriar terrace. I was enjoying my day off in the sun when i heard them yell. Only 2 made it across the cove to the dock. The 3rd, a teenager who i'd pulled out of the pool twice the summer before, drowned. The day i and others tried to save him he was found 45 minutes later 16 ft deep in hydrilla at the bottom of the cove. The water so murky that day i could open my eyes under the water, hold my hand out and couldn't see my fingers moving. To this day, i remember vividly the dive team bringing up his lifeless young body and i cringe. I have witnessed FIRST HAND how unsupervised activities around that park end up, I don't want to be out on the boat with my parents and have to look for another one. I don't work as a lifegaurd anymore, but i still have kept up my certifications. I can't not look for someone. But people who use the park for lake access should use better judgement. Im just afraid with the intelect of this area some won't. Sign posted or not, its city property and if something happens, i don't think it would end pretty. Im not saying close the park i just think their should be some form of security or supervisor of it during the majority of the time it is accessed, thats all.

I agree 100%, but the city has covered their rears with the signs they have posted, thats not even an issue as far as a court case is concerned. But I do agree it would be nice to have one to oversee that is some-what trained in a bit of Security and EMS. I also have searched Lake Gaston and the River for folks in my days with fire and rescue. Most of the time it was the person's fault, like you said, they either couldn't swim or were intoxicated, but made the wrong decision to jump in the water.
Slash.......as far as people being thugs, its not a one sided, or one race term......a thug can be black or white, even hispanic. A thug is one described as a person that is up to no good. If its blacks doing it, then yes....they are thugs, but the same avenue comes into place for whites as well. But the problem down at the park comes from the black thugs, its an over-abundance of them there breaking the rules and causing hardship between the other black and white people that are there trying to have a good time. What some folks don't seem to understand is the fact that it is operated by the city, its not a place to bring your cooler of beer and get drunk, its a city park to go to and enjoy and take your family. If you must bring your cooler and your dope, leave in the car and learn how to act before coming into contact with the general public..............remember, we don't have to put up with it, and thats why the police are starting a patrol on it, cause we aren't putting up with it. If this offended any black people, I'm sorry...it was not intended to, it was being brought to the table the way it should be set to light. I am white, don't have anything against black people, I have several black friends and co-workers that are great people. I have been called racist on here in the past, and I might be a racist in the eyes of some, but its not racist based on color, its racist to ignorance..............I hate stupid people that can't live a good life of doing the right thing and acting like civil humans by obeying the rules.....and that goes out to all of them, black, white, or hispanic.

Summer, It is beautiful down there, And a shame that everyone can't be treated by the other patrons with respect. we've only been in the early morning and the beach is empty. But as we were leaving, we witnessed what all the talk is about. I hope there is a solution, before something bad happens like the previous posts suggests.

I've gone in it once, and been by it about three or four times. I haven't noticed any security problem, but then I usually go by there at about 5pm on weekdays and weekends.
And I would rather swim in the pool than the lake. I'd avoid swimming in murky water that might have something that may want to nibble on my toes... LOL

and boy are there things to nibble at you kestrel. brim bite moles/freckles. karp will bite toes. snakes bite everything. baby copperheads will swim right between your legs. other than to pee in the slam middle of the lake, i haven't been swimming in that lake in 6 years. i like pools. i like to see whats under me myself.

The only bad thing about a pool is that you can't boat in it! A pool is a little cleaner usually, especially if its a private owned one at a residence. The water quality here on the lakes is some of the best anywhere near here though......kinda surprising isn't it? There isn't a ton of industry above us on the river to pollute it, its a few beyond the mill and down river, but not a bunch above us. I've taunted along the Roanoke River as far up as Roanoke Va, its a good river system. Full of fish and snakes for sure, but the water isn't that bad at all as far as quality goes, as a matter of fact it is almost drinkable with very little need of purification according to state tests done over the years.

i'll go on the boat in the lake. i just won't get off the boat. lol.

I agree with yankeesfan. And I've boated the Roanoke River and all three lakes. But I don't intend to swim the water unless I get a sinking feeling in the boat. But we were talking about the new park/beach, where one cannot put a boat in. But I do agree doomster, the water quality of the Roanoke River is good, such that I think it is the only river basin in NC without buffer rules to help water quality.

BLACK???SLASH...where did the "BLACK" comment come from? I didn't see anyone make references to "race" - Thug certainly doesn't mean they must be black, that would be stereotyping wouldn't it?

I've been to the lake park several times, with my kids and my kid's friends. We usually go first thing in the morning as the older kids (i.e. teenagers) don't start showing up until around 12 or 1 or so. I've only had two incidences where I had to pack up the kids and leave: once was because a group of teens were dropping F-bombs left and right, the other time was because a group of teens/young adults were spashing around the shallow part of the swim area and not looking where they were running or landing. I didn't want one of them to land on my 5 year old.
I've seen the police there on two visits and they have a guy in a golf cart who drives around regularly. As far as the pool losing business don't worry about that. The manager told me the pool has made more money so far this year then they did last year at this time. It's nice to have a choice of places to take the kids to swim this summer and as long as I feel safe taking my kids to the lake park by myself I'll continue to do so.

You would be in the minority on this board if you think "thug" meant anything but black as it was written in that post.

Slash, I disagree. The thought of race didn't even enter my mind until you brought it up. I have been away from the The Roanoke Valley for about 15 years but I lived there for the first 34 years of my life. For whatever reason, "RACE" seems to be the most important issue there.

It's funny, here in Va. Beach, you have the white thugs, black thugs, hispanic thugs......then you have the asian thugs. To me, a thug is anyone who displays certain mannerisms, regardless of the color!

doomster-- your response to the race issue that was brought up about the new beach area was pure TACT. I'm sure you have heard the old cliche about what the true meaning of tact is-- being able to tell someone where to go and make them look forward to getting there. I commend you for being "racist to ignorance" because I feel the same way. But there is one thing that always comes to mind concerning ignorant people: never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.

Man......bring up an old post from the graveyard would you???
But I'll tell you this much, rather you be black, white, or green, if you go some place and the general public sees blacks down there or whites messing up its no one's fault but their own. Like earlier said........can't take 'em out of the trailer park...........but most of the problems steemed down there this summer where from black males drinking alcohol, ask your local police, but I am sorry if offends you.

Tact is when you say something to get the point across without being offensive and try to maintain a decent character.......which is kinda hard to do on an internet forum, reason being is you can't really see a person's emotions in a post. A bunch of you guys think my postings are offensive at times, which is why I apologized above to deadeye, he might have taken it a little offensive.......so I covered my bases. I try to maintain a decent status and provide facts usually......but we all slip from time to time, no hard feelings though........just being me.

doomster--Excuuuuuuse me won't ya. I was trying to pay you a compliment on the post you made that I brought up from the graveyard!!!!!! I told you that I felt the same way you did about what was going on down there. I fail to see where anything I said would lead you to think that I was offended by anything in your post. I thought you handled the situation in a tactful manner, and I was just complimenting you on it. You took everything I said completely out of context. From now on, don't waste your apologies on me. Save them for someone else!!!!!
