WIFI hotspotsAsk and you shall receive.
It's not snazzy. I was trying to get a map which marked all the locations, but I was having with google maps. I'll get it on eventually. But in the meantime, I hope this helps people.

There was a rumor going around a while back that the entire city of Roanoke Rapids was going to be a WiFi area. Did anyone else hear that? I think it would be great if it ever came about.

Well, that would certainly make mapping it easier

Good luck with that with the current battle going on in the General Assembly.

what's the current battle?

Oh, the City of Wilson has been installing high speed internet service in the city, and various telecom companies are fighting it. It's wired internet verses wifi, but there have been battles elsewhere in the nation where telecom companies have fought free city wide wifi.

I can see the dispute. The wired companies would lose so much business.

I wish they would lose my business. I'd love to have free internet.

Well, I think the situation in Wilson is over paid wired internet from the city. But if the telecom companies win this battle, I think free wifi will have a hard time being introduced.

I can say I have heard nothing about free Wi-Fi around here. I am actually well equipped to survey for this for you and will try to start on it today in fact. I will start off by saying that you can forget about trying to get free Wi-Fi around the schools. Its getting redone now and will be almost impossible to hack.
To give you one example I know of so far with free WiFi is the Jameson. I know its open, but I will check to make sure there is no authentication or key you need.
I am glad your working on this though. I have wanted to build a WiFi database and have collected most of the ones you already have listed up here.

Let me know what I'm missing and I'll add it.

For starters it looks like all the hotels. I hit the Hampton Inn, Jameson, Fairfax, Sleep/Comfort Inns, Interstate Inn, etc. just on a quick run through town a few minutes ago with my phone. Now I don't know what the exact details are, but all of these were wide open with no WEP/WPA encryption on any of them.

Ok, cool, I'll put those hotels in this afternoon.

I enjoy it. But I have a Pocket PC phone with software that sniffs out wireless networks, and can tell you the SSID, encryption (if any), range, etc. Hell it will even MAP the locations of the access points if you have a GPS system tied into your pocket PC. I think we are going to get one from work to do this.

Yeah, I've worked on a couple wireless home networks in town, and at both I've noticed other wireless networks in the neighborhood.

Yea its not that expensive either. I got it on eBay for $150. Just an Alltel PPC6700. Sprint and Verizon Wireless also have the exact same phone. UT Starcom 6700. The software is called WiFiFoFum, and its very simple and powerful. The phones themselves use Windows Mobile 5, but you do NOT have to have a data plan to put these phones on an account as they do not need to pull data from your cellular carriers network.
Kestrel your right. I turn this thing on and cruise through neighborhoods and it chimes like crazy at me picking up all the new access points.

Hmm... sounds cool!
I've toyed around with the idea of getting a phone/computer combo, but then I'm a cheapskate. I wonder if it has a dongle to hook to wired networks, since we don't have wireless at work. (though you are not suppose to hook to it...)

This phone has an attachment to sync to my PC. I mainly got it for the purposes of having the appointments, calendars, and ability to make Excel and Word spreadsheets on the go, or have them saved to pull up when I am onsite. The other things I have discovered are nice bonuses, and I have used WiFiFoFum to sniff out WAPs that had been put up by teachers or staff that were unencrypted and would allow anybody on our network. And hell, $150 isn't bad for a new phone. Many folks pay that much or more for a plain jane phone, not even a Pocket PC.
